Colon Hydrotherapy

What is Colon Hydrotherapy?
Sometimes referred to as a colonic or colonic irrigation, colon hydrotherapy is a safe and effective method of removing built-up waste, without drugs, from the colon, (also known as the large intestine). By introducing body-temperature, filtered water into the colon, the waste is softened and loosened, resulting in evacuation through peristalsis (the colon’s involuntary muscle contractions used to move waste through the digestive tract). This gentle process is repeated a number of times, during a 30 to 45-minute session.

Historically, colon cleansing with water was recognized as a valuable practice, used to maintain and restore one’s health. It has been used since at least 1500 B.C., as recorded in ancient medical documents.

Body Essentials is the only spa on Cape Cod that offers this valuable service, east of Sandwich.

How the colon works:
The colon is a muscular tube approximately 5-6 feet in length with an average diameter of 2.5 inches. The small intestine empties the contents of digestion, called chyme, into the cecum or first part of the colon. The chyme is moved along by the muscular contractions of peristalsis, which is initiated by the colon’s many nerves. The main function of the colon is to absorb water and minerals, along with forming and eliminating feces. Digestion, starting with the ingestion of food and ending with its elimination, normally takes between 12 to 24 hours.

Why should I be concerned about my colon?
The colon is a holding tank for your body’s wastes. The quick and easy removal of this toxic material is an important part of maintaining one’s health. Most of us do not think about our colon’s natural functions until out health deteriorates and we feel constipated or have diarrhea. The body naturally benefits from the release of this built-up congestion in the bowel. A healthy colon produces Vitamins B and K, and absorbs water. Since our digestive tract is our second defense against infection (after the skin) and supports about 70% of our immune system, keeping it working at its best is a key ingredient to maintaining one’s health.

What is a colon hydrotherapy session like?
Body Essential’s colon hydrotherapy equipment used is state-of-the-art and FDA approved. It has safe hygienic features:water purification, temperature control, water-flow sensors, a built-in, sanitation system and disposable, hospital-grade tubing and speculum. Working with only one client at a time in the whole spa, the session is completely private and confidential. Additionally, a bathroom is attached to the colon hydrotherapy room.

Once the client is comfortably settled on the table, and the tubing is in place, a small amount of water is released into the colon. The gentle flow of water has no added pressure. The process stimulates the natural peristaltic action, which releases the softened waste. The inflow of water and the release may be repeated several times over 30 to 45 minutes. Deep breathing, abdominal massage aided by a heating pad and reflexology are used to enhance one’s cleansing.

The client is kept draped at all times and his/her dignity is thoroughly maintained. A respectful, caring and nurturing environment is of utmost concern, with one’s well-being and comfort being my number one focus. In my experience, it doesn’t hurt to have a sense of humor about the whole experience.

After a cleanse, clients report feeling lighter and having more energy. Being able to button your pants more easily can also be an added bonus.

How many sessions will I need?
Every “body” is different. Starting with one session is a positive step in the right direction for many people, with dramatic, results seen. Some prefer to do a series of either 3 consecutive days or weekly to start. I am happy to discuss what best suits your individual needs.

Preparation
To prepare for your session, it is best if you do not eat 2-3 hours before your appointment. Avoid gas-forming foods, such as broccoli, cauliflower, onions and beans, starting the day before your colon cleansing. Some clients do a modified fast of fresh juices, broths and pureed soups 24 or 48 hours before the appointment.

To enhance your colon hydrotherapy session you may want to apply a castor oil pack for an hour a day, starting three days before your appointment, to help facilitate a more effective colonic. (See information below)

I work by appointment and offer day or evening sessions as well as some Saturdays.

Castor Oil Packs
DO NOT USE if pregnant or during menstrual flow.
Body Essentials has castor oil pack kits available for $15.00. The pack includes a piece of wool flannel and 4 oz. castor oil. Soak the wool flannel with a generous amount of castor oil. To warm, place the flannel in a glass baking dish and gently heat in the oven on low (do not heat it in the microwave). Testing to make sure it isn’t too hot, place the saturated flannel on the abdomen and cover with a hand towel. Place a hot water bottle or heating pad over the hand towel. Lie down and leave in place for 1 to 1 1/2 hours while resting, meditating, reading or listening to music.

After removing the pack, wash skin with a solution of 1 teaspoon baking soda dissolved in a cup of water. Refrigerate the pack in a jar or plastic bag.

To re-use: Saturate flannel with the castor oil again and gently warm in the oven on low heat.
Repeat instructions above.
